Frequently Asked Questions

"Why should I work with you over another advisor?"

In all fairness, it's not a guarantee that you should. Piertree Planning was designed for millennials who are looking for more than a typical advisor relationship. Rather than just managing your money and checking in with you once a year, we build relationships with our clients and help you design your future while being there every step of the way. If you're looking for something different than your parent's financial advisor, we might be the right fit for you.

What kind of clients will Piertree Planning work with?

Piertree clients are: • In their 20s and 30s • Looking for guidance on all aspects of their financial life, not just investments • Interested in a fee-only, fiduciary financial planner • Willing to make changes in their current life to reach their goals Piertree clients do not: • Take the advice of friends or colleagues over the advice of a licensed professional • Get in and out of the market based on news from their coworker or favorite financial 'guru'

Do you only handle investments?

Nope! A common misconception about financial planning is that it only consists of picking stocks and hoping they go up. At Piertree, we work with you to resolve your financial pain points and create a true plan to get you where you want to go. In addition, we do provide investment management and is included in our planning fee.

Do I need a certain amount of money to work with you?

Nope! One great thing about Piertree is that our goal is to help our generation achieve financial freedom and we understand that a majority of us don't have large amounts of money to invest right away.

How do I get started?

The first step is to schedule your free Clarity Call. This is a quick, no commitment call that allows us to go over your current situation and to see if our services make sense for you.

Do you offer socially responsible investing (SRI)?

We do! Through our investment manager, we're able to help you invest in companies that align with your values, are socially responsible, and are helping make the world a better place.

What is your investment approach?

We don't believe that actively managed portfolios that claim giant returns are better than a well-planned, passive investment approach. We aim to minimize your fees and align your investments with your personal goals primarily through index funds and low-cost mutual funds.

"Why would I need a financial advisor?"

This is a question we get all the time and for good reason! While it is difficult to picture the benefits of having a financial advisor if you haven't worked with one before, the long term peace of mind knowing your finances are being taken care of by a professional can be worth the cost in itself. Also, there was a study done by Vanguard that shows investors who have a financial advisor average 3% more in net returns than investors who don’t have an advisor. In today's world, tax and financial laws and regulations are changing all the time so it's important to be in the know to avoid making costly mistakes.

Do you work with clients outside of Kansas City?

We do! With technology becoming a larger part of the financial services industry, Piertree is able to provide you with the same superior customer service all through video conferencing. Our firm is designed around technology and everything we do is centered around the idea of making financial planning as frictionless as possible. We handle all of our data-gathering through PreciseFP's secured network to make the process of building our financial plans as easy and securely as possible for both of us.

How often do you communicate with clients?

While we're always available to our clients to answer questions, we have one-on-one meetings every quarter to make sure everything in our plan still lines up with your situation. Our client service calendar is provided to each client to show what we are doing each month for you and to give you an idea of what's coming up. We also send out our weekly newsletter, not the boring stock market commentary you may be expecting, so you're always in the know of what's going at Piertree and in the financial world without falling asleep.
